                                                                                                I. CALCUTTA JUTE CLIPPERS


                CEDRIC THE SAXON (1875 - 1896),  tonnage 1,705 gross and 1,619 net, length 259ft 8in,
                beam 40ft 1in, depth 23ft 6in.  Constructed of  iron, built by John Reid of Port Glasgow for  Messrs.
                J. Williamson and W.C.A. Milligan, Liverpool, of the Waverly Line.   She was a handsome ship and
                much admired. She made runs to Calcutta for jute, Adelaide and Port Pirie in South Australia, and
                via Melbourne to San Francisco.  In 1896,  she was sold to foreign owners. She loaded a cargo of
                case oil in New York and left for the East Indies and wasn't heard of again.   
              



                SLIEVE ROE (1878 - 1910),  tonnage 1,749 gross and 1,667 net, length 257ftn 1in, beam 38ft 3in,
                depth 24ft 1in,  Constructed of iron,built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, for Messrs. W.P. Sinclair & Co,
                Liverpool, who were prominent in the jute trade. She was a fast ship.and is credited with making 1500
                miles in five days in a passage out to Calcutta in the S.E. Trades in 1888.  She is also credited with a
                record run from Melbourne to Callao, Chile, in 28 days after she was sold in 1904 to Simpson Bros.
                She was sold in 1910 to Norwegian owners who sent her to the ship breakers.
